TMG Powder 50 grams Item Catalog Number: 00349 |
|
TMG is also called glycine betaine, but the name 'tri-methylglycine' signifies that it has three methyl groups attached to each molecule of glycine. Betaine was discovered to be beneficial to heart health back in the 1950s.69-73 TMG operates along a different pathway than the B vitamins. TMG acts as a “methyl donor,” providing extra methyl groups to hasten the conversion of homocysteine back to methionine.74 Research showing TMG’s ability to promote healthy levels of homocysteine alone or in conjunction with other nutrients, confirms its status as an important nutrient for cardiovascular health.75-83* For example, a recent study in women who have high dietary intakes of TMG and its precursor molecule, choline,84 homocysteine was 8% lower in the highest quintile of total betaine plus choline intake than in the lowest quintile. When a TMG methyl group is donated to a molecule of homocysteine to produce dimethylglycine and, the non-toxic amino acid, methionine, S-adenosyl-methio-nine (SAMe) is produced.85,86 |
