Reverse T3 is a non-functioning form of the active hormone triiodothyronine (T3). In the tissues, T4 normally converts to T3. However, other hormones such as cortisol may inhibit this conversion, producing reverse T3 (rT3).
Having high levels of reverse T3 is known as thyroid resistance and produces symptoms of low thyroid function (hypothyroidism). If you suffer from symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, dry skin or hair loss and your traditional thyroid lab results are inconclusive, you might consider checking your reverse T3 level.
Fasting is not required. Take all medications as prescribed.

Reverse T-3: Metabolism's Arch Nemesis

This blood test is extremely important. My doctor and I would not have seen a need for liothyronine (T3) had it not been for this test. My TSH was high, but my Free T3 levels were about mid-range. Most doctors prescribe Synthroid (T4) to decrease TSH. This would have made my situation worse. The Synthroid would have further converted to more Reverse T3. She put me on compounded Sustain-Released Liothyronine 5mcg. It brought my Reverse T3 down from very high 35.9, down to in range at 15.9 after about 2 months or so. I have been increased to 10mcg T3 daily because my Free T3 dropped from 2.8 to 2.2. My Free T3/Reverse T3 ratio has significantly improved and I imagine will get much better once I get my Free T3 in the upper third of the range.
Service and delivery comments:
Blood Test requisition forms are delivered fairly quick. Customer service is great. I called them and asked about their annual blood test sale and they honored the price for me even though I placed the order a couple days before. Top notch service.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
