Coenzyme Q10 is produced by the human body and is necessary for the basic functioning of all cells. It is known to be highly concentrated in heart muscle cells due to the high energy requirements of this cell type.

The CoQ10 blood level is reported to decrease with age and to be low in patients with such chronic diseases as a heart condition, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's disease, cancer, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS.

Some prescription drugs may also lower CoQ10 levels, like statin medications used to lower cholesterol. You can check your CoQ10 blood level with or without fasting.
