Cytokines are important in the inflammatory response. This test is used to identify elevated levels of TNF-alpha. While inflammation is important for a healthy immune response, the cytokines themselves have the potential for inducing damage.

TNF-alpha is a growth factor for immune cells and osteoclasts, the cells that break down bone. It may be elevated in chronic infections, certain cancers and Hepatitis C.

Fasting is not required for this test. Take all prescription medications as prescribed, but do not take your supplements on the morning of the test. Each of these tests may also be ordered individually.
