The Life Extension Foundation has designed a health maintenance protocol that incorporates the best-documented nutrients, hormones, and drugs.

The recommendations made in this section consist of the 12 most important steps the average person should take to maintain an optimal state of physical and mental health.

When deciding on the 12 most important components of a life extension program, the foremost factor we consider is the preponderance of scientific data that substantiates the benefits of a particular nutrient, drug, or hormone. We also look at the cost-to-benefit ratio, i.e., we sometimes rule out compounds that are too expensive in relationship to lower cost items that may show equal efficacy. Convenience is also an important factor. We seek to provide the maximum amount of potency in the fewest possible capsules, tablets, etc.

The following 12 recommendations are listed in order of importance. It is critical, however, to attempt to follow all of them. For instance, it would be imprudent to take steps to maintain healthy cognitive function, but fail to protect the bones against a crippling fracture induced by osteoporosis. It should also be realized that some people’s individual medical circumstances might make certain recommendations more important than others.

These 12 steps are based solely on the most important drugs, hormones, and nutrients. The most important step, calorie restriction, is not mentioned here because few people are able to chronically under eat.

For those seeking aggressive solutions for specific diseases,
we suggest referring to the appropriate chapter in the
4th Edition of the Disease Prevention and Treatment book.
