Urge Senators To
Oppose Bill To Ban Human Cloning
(Update)

Everyone who would like to see therapeutic cloning move forward should urge members of the U.S. Senate to oppose The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2001 (S.790) sponsored by Sam Brownback of Kansas. The struggle over whether therapeutic cloning should be legal in the U.S. is highly dynamic and the specifics could change considerably over the next few months.

Legislation on human cloning (including the Brownback bill) is expected to be discussed by the Senate Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education of the Committee on Appropriations and, possibly, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. The hearings are expected to start in February or March 2002 (no dates have been set yet).

Update:
The lastest news (as of March 22) is that the Brownback bill to ban cloning (S.790) will probably be voted on in the full Senate during the month of April. The Brownback bill bans all forms of cloning, including therapeutic cloning. An alternative bill sponsored by Senators Feinstein, Specter, Kennedy and others bans reproductive cloning, but allows therapeutic cloning research to continue. The Life Extension Foundation strongly opposes the Brownback bill and urges you to express your opposition to this bill to members of the Senate. Since it appears as if every member of the Senate will be voting on the Brownback bill, The Foundation now recommends that you voice your opposition to every member of the Senate, starting with the two Senators who represent your state. We recommend that you contact your home state Senators at both their home offices and their Washington, D.C. offices.

We suggest that you send letters (by postal mail, email and/or fax) and make phone calls in opposition to S.790 to the members of this subcommittee as well as to the two Senators that represent your state. Information about how to contact members of the Subcommittee is printed below. To obtain the postal addresses and regular and fax numbers of U.S. Senators, call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. To e-mail your Senator, go to www.senate.gov and click on "List Senators by State."

At the bottom is a sample letter to send to U.S. Senators. Feel free to use all or part of the content of this letter in putting together your letter(s) opposing S.790 to these Senators. Also, don't hesitate to send such letters in your own words. And don't forget phone calls. We need to express our opinions in this matter in every way we can.

The Honorable __________________
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator _______________:

I urge you to vote against S.790, The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2001, sponsored by Kansas Republican Sam Brownback. Passage of this bill would make it a criminal offense to conduct research on the development of new therapies using stem cells derived from very early-stage cloned embryos. It would greatly slow the development of therapeutic cloning, the most promising new technology in medicine.

Therapeutic cloning involves the generation of young, immunologically-identical cells, tissues and organs for transplant. It has the potential to cure killers such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, arthritis and Parkinson's disease. It also could be instrumental in the development of therapies to reverse the infirmities and ravages of aging, leading to longer, healthier lives for millions of Americans.

Most of the top scientists in the United States support therapeutic cloning research. These include Nobel laureates such as Dr. David Baltimore and Dr. Harold Varmus and organizations such as the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Federation of American Societies For Experimental Biology (FASEB).

Scientists support therapeutic cloning research because they understand that embryonic stem cells derived from early-stage clones can potentially be transformed into a wide variety of life-saving tissues that could be transplanted into sick and aging people without rejection. They understand that the ability to develop such therapies is an extraordinary development in science that promises to revolutionize medicine in the 21st century.

It is imperative that you and your colleagues understand the enormous potential of therapeutic cloning research. If the U.S. government acts to ban this remarkable technology, it would be a huge mistake. You can avoid making this mistake by voting against The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2001 (S.790). I urge you to do so.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would respond to this letter.

Sincerely yours,
