Senate Vote On Bill To Ban Human Cloning Expected In May

If the bill to ban human cloning sponsored by Sam Brownback (R) of Kansas (now called S.1899) is passed by the U.S. Senate, it will become law. The new law will make it illegal to conduct therapeutic cloning research in the U.S. Therapeutic cloning promises to lead to cures for cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, other killer diseases and therapies to slow and reverse aging.
Right now, it looks as if the Brownback bill will come to a vote on the Senate floor in May, sometime before Memorial Day. It looks as if the vote will be very close. A simple majority is needed to pass the bill. A recent tally by the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research showed 35 Senators in favor of the bill, 35 Senators against it and 30 Senators undecided.
