The heart of LEF's efforts to extend the healthy human life span is its unique research programs to identify, measure, and develop advanced, new therapies to

The Foundation has funded an innovative high-tech research program, which aims to pin-point the genetic and bio chemical changes associated with aging. The Foundation has funded lifespan studies in mice to determine the effects on aging and life span of potential antiaging therapies. These studies are being conducted by experimental gerontologists at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, the University of California in Riverside, and the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. The studies have been designed to test the anti-aging potential of vitamins and hormones now being used by life extensionists to counteract biochemical processes proposed (by gerontologists) as primary causes of aging. Some of these mechanisms of aging include oxidative stress (induced by free radicals), declining energy production (mitochondrial disorder), glycosylation (pathological binding of protein and glucose molecules), and loss of methylation capacity (required for DNA maintenance and repair enzymatic actions).
