Researchers claim exercise should be added to prescription for people with conditions like heart disease, with physical activity outperforming some drugs. The research, published in the British Medical Journal, found that exercise rivalled some heart disease drugs and performed better than stroke medicine. But experts insists patients shouldn't turn to exercise in place of drugs, but rather should be using the two together. Scientists based at the London School of Economics, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute at Harvard Medical School and Stanford University School of Medicine examined more than 300 trials that compared exercise and pills as treatments for heart disease, stroke rehabilitation, heart failure and pre-diabetes. The study found that exercise and drugs were comparable in terms of death rate when the data was examined as a whole. But there were two exceptions, with drugs called diuretics performing the best for heart failure patients and exercise being the best option for those recovering from strokes.
