Iranian scientists eliminate cancer cells by turmeric

Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) (Iran)

TEHRAN (ISNA)- Iranian scientists at Tarbiat Modarres University have produced a new pharmaceutical composition with desirable physical and chemical sustainability extracting turmeric (curcuma longa), capable of identifying and eliminating cancer cells. Curcumin is one of the herbal compositions found in turmeric. It was traditionally used in treatment of a wide range of diseases, including respiratory and inflammatory diseases as well as wounds recovery. The new pharmaceutical combination curcumin (with 87 percent efficiency) has been placed inside the polymeric nano-carriers and makes a spherical form 140 nano-meter long. The drug enjoys high chemical and physical sustainability. It has been used successfully for treatment of a tumor attacking central nervous system in vitro. The cancer cells were treated with the method. Duplication and growth of these cells decreased and they gradually died. The curcumin does not damage or kill healthy cells, and only targets those affected with cancer. The results of the study have been published in the International Journal of Nanomedicine. End Item
