Aug. 29--Also known as wolfberries, goji berries offer a bunch of health benefits.
Like blueberries, acai berries, cranberries, blueberries and cherries -- goji berries are packed with antioxidants. Goji berries also offer compounds rich in vitamin A.
Some studies using goji berry juice found benefits in mental well-being and calmness, athletic performance, happiness, quality of sleep, and feelings of good health, according to Web MD.
Who doesn't need that? So, goji berries are worth trying.
We tried dried goji berries that were sold in the dried fruit section of a local grocery store.
The berries are dark pink and taste like a cross between dried cranberries and dried apricots. Our tasters were divided on whether they taste good on their own.
However, most agreed they would be a welcomed addition to cereal or trail mix.
Here are some ideas for using goji berries from the website Down to Earth:
Smoothies: Soak a handful of goji berries in water for 10 minutes. Once they are plump and juicy, add them to your favorite smoothie.
Trail mix: Add goji berries to your favorite trail mix. Or, make your own by mixing your favorite nuts and dried fruit with some goji berries. For kids, add some chocolate or peanut butter chips to the mix.
Cereal: Add goji berries like you would any other dried fruit to hot or cold cereals.
Breakfast breads: Add goji berries to muffins or scones just as you would raisins.
Energy bars: Blend a handful of goji berries together with a cup of walnuts, 1/2 cup almonds and 5 or 6 dates in a food processor. Roll the mix into balls or spread in a deep pan to make bars.
Here is a sauce recipe for use on meats or as a dressing or a dip for fruits, veggies or salads.
GOJI VERY BERRY SAUCE
1/2 cup goji berries, soaked 1 hour in water
1/2 cup blackberries or raspberries
1 cup young coconut meat
2 pitted dates
1/2 teaspoon orange zest
1. Add enough coconut water to turn over in blender
2. Blend until smooth.
