SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Sept. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A recent Cancer Treatment Centers of America(R) (CTCA) study entitled "The relationship between baseline nutritional status with subsequent parenteral nutrition and clinical outcomes in cancer patients undergoing hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy" identified the importance of proper nutrition in cancer patients undergoing hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. The study's findings were published in the August 2013 edition of Nutrition Journal, and have led to a change in care for all patients at CTCA.
According to the study's findings, malnutrition within cancer patients undergoing HIPEC increased their length of stay in the hospital post-surgery. However, incorporating proper nutrition into the diet of cancer patients being treated with HIPEC helped lead to a survival advantage for the patient, as well as a reduction in the length of stay. Additionally, the study found that nutritional assessment and intervention may be critical to achieving optimal clinical outcomes including quality of life, survival rate and the ability to better tolerate treatment.
While proper nutrition is important for all cancer patients, this study indicates that it is especially necessary for those undergoing HIPEC treatment. As a result of these findings, CTCA has incorporated nutritional evaluation and intervention for every patient undergoing HIPEC. "We knew that nutrition was important," said lead author Pankaj Vashi, MD, National Clinical Director of Gastroenterology/Nutrition and Metabolic Support "but this study shows just how essential it is to helping patients with quality of life and recovery after surgery."
