Prostate Cancer Awareness Month: Nutritional Supplements and Vitamins for Prostate Health
September, 2010 has been designated as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month by the National Prostate Cancer Coalition through resolutions from the President of the United States and the U.S. Senate. Long before the initiation of this much-needed yearly event, the Life Extension Foundation® was a strong promoter of prostate cancer awareness and a source of support and information concerning prostate cancer patient nutrition and prostate health. Life Extension was among the earliest organizations to publicize the benefits of herbal supplements and other nutritional supplements to help prevent benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH, or prostate enlargement) as well as reduce its symptoms. Additionally, Life Extension Magazine® has published a number of articles over the years on the subject of prostate cancer, BPH, male hormones, and other men's health issues, in addition to timely updates on vitamins and other nutritional supplements.
Although a good deal of debate surrounds current prostate cancer screening methods, it is nevertheless recommended that all men over the age of 50 consult with their physician on the subject of their prostate health. While the role that hormones play in this disease is also a topic of debate, some studies suggest that specific vitamins, herbal supplements and other supplements may help protect against the development of prostate cancer.
National Prostate Cancer Awareness month is the ideal time to make that long put-off appointment with one's physician for yearly prostate cancer screening and to remind your loved ones that prostate cancer is one of the most treatable cancers if caught in its early stages.

Prostate Cancer
The battle to prevent this disease, to diagnose it earlier, and to treat it effectively is also not occurring at the proper pace largely because men are not taking an active role in winning this war. As we are learning in our war against terrorism, you defeat the enemy by recognizing their presence early (not late), preventing their buildup, learning their location, and eradicating them with the proper weaponry. There are too many men, already diagnosed with PC, who are not taking an active role in their own recovery. Many believe that because they are consulting a professional with a medical degree (who may also command a generous salary), all or part of this equates with getting the very best advice and treatment. Wrong. In today's world of rapid pace, where medicine is practiced with 15-minute office visits and where physicians are too busy to read and translate much of what is being published, the patient and his partner must not take a passive role and assume that all that can be done is being done.
