Life Extension's suggestions for blood clot prophylaxis rely upon a multifactorial approach that optimizes benefit and minimizes the risk of serious complications from thrombosis. This involves regular blood testing to assess biomarkers in the blood known to be associated with endothelial dysfunction and a hypercoagulable state, such as homocysteine, blood lipids (e.g. cholesterol, triglycerides), C-reactive protein, and thyroid hormone. Also suggested is direct measurement of the tendency for blood hypercoaguability, such as prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), platelet count, and fibrinogen level. Reduction of thrombosis risk also involves making nutritional and lifestyle choices consistent with the most current research on arterial and venous thrombosis risk reduction.

It should be noted that the majority of the natural ingredients below interact with platelets to modulate the clotting process. Therefore, tests that measure secondary hemostasis, such as PT and aPTT, cannot be used as benchmarks to assess the impact these supplements have on your clotting parameters. Instead, the bleeding time test should be used to assess how "thin" your blood is as a result of your supplementation regimen.

  • Fish oil (with olive polyphenols): 1400 mg EPA/1000 mg DHA daily
  • Flax seed oil: 1000 – 3000 mg daily (optional if fish oil is taken)
  • Olive leaf; standardized extract: 250 – 1000 mg daily (optional if olive polyphenols are obtained in fish oil or possibly other sources such as high dietary sources of olive oil)
  • Black tea; standardized extract: 350 mg daily
  • Capsaicin (from cayenne): supplying 40 000 – 100 000 HU; per label instructions
  • Ginger; standardized extract: 150 – 450 mg daily
  • Curcumin: 400 – 800 mg daily (BCM-95-enhanced absorption curcumin)
