Study sheds light on tamoxifen resistance

July 30 2014. An article published on July 25, 2014 in Cancer Research reveals the outcome of a study conducted at Tulane University which revealed a vital role for melatonin, a hormone produced in response to darkness, in the treatment of breast cancer with the drug tamoxifen.

"Resistance to endocrine therapy is a major impediment to successful treatment of breast cancer," write authors Robert T. Dauchy of Tulane University School of Medicine and colleagues. "Preclinical and clinical evidence links resistance to antiestrogen drugs in breast cancer cells with the overexpression and/or activation of various pro-oncogenic tyrosine kinases."
