The combination of diabetes and obesity—now termed “diabesity” by some experts—is the largest epidemic the world has ever faced.1 By some estimates, the total number of individuals with obesity-induced diabetes will escalate to 366 million worldwide by 2030.2

“Diabesity” is a term used to describe the continuum from optimal blood sugar balance to insulin resistance and diabetes. Many people who are overweight already have pre-diabetes. They just don’t know it! Even worse, though the word “diabesity” is made up of the concepts of “obesity” and “diabetes,” even those who aren’t overweight can have this problem.

Inflammation nearly always accompanies both obesity and diabetes and contributes significantly to the metabolic dysfunction associated with diabesity. While most people certainly understand that diabetes is characterized by impaired glucose metabolism they don’t understand that diabetes also involves impaired fat metabolism.

This “diabesity” panel contains the following tests to evaluate insulin resistance, long term blood sugar control, healthy fat metabolism and cardiac risk:

  • Fasting glucose and insulin To determine blood sugar control and insulin resistance.
  • Hemoglobin A1C To determine long term blood sugar control.
  • VAP® Test Advanced Cholesterol Test for impaired fat metabolism.
  • Cortisol Your stress hormone – important in fat storage.
  • C-Reactive Protein – high sensitivity To determine inflammation in your body.

This panel requires you to fast for 8 to 12 hours prior to your blood draw. Don’t eat or drink anything other than water; however take all medications as prescribed. Since this panel contains a cortisol test it is also best to have your blood drawn at approximately 8:00 AM.
